Richard Ashcroft delivered an exhilarating performance at Newmarket Nights on Friday, thrilling a packed crowd with a set that perfectly blended Verve classics and his acclaimed solo material.

The former Verve frontman took to the stage kicking off with “Sonnet” from the iconic “Urban Hymns” album, immediately setting a high bar for the night. Ashcroft’s laid-back charisma filled the stage as the audience enthusiastically sang along and waved their arms to hits which included “The Drugs Don’t Work”.

His solo career was well-represented, with a particularly rousing performance of “Music is Power” that had the entire crowd dancing and singing, injecting a joyous energy into the evening. Ashcroft also showcased newer material, including his latest single “Lover,” which was well-received.

Throughout the nine-song set, Ashcroft’s vocals were amazing and each track was a ‘blown away’ moment. Although only nine songs, each was an extended version, whether it was more repeats of the chorus, or instrumental sections to showcase the brilliant band, regardless, having an extra-long version of one of your favourite tracks being played live is a joyful experience and the crowed were delighted.

This gig marked Ashcroft’s last before a ‘busy summer’ as the opening act for the highly anticipated Oasis reunion tour, making his Newmarket Nights performance a special treat for those who were there.

As the light was fading the light show stepped up a notch to add to the fantastic night and he finished with an electric  ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ to which the crowd were singing every line while Ashcroft was clearly humbly enjoying the atmosphere.

It was an amazing night.
